A Facelift For Leland #1
Submitted by chasland on Fri, 06/25/2010 - 15:05.Created by NW Artist Lee Kelley with his wife Bonnie Bronson and erected in 1975 in Portland Center Park as part of the Halprin Blocks, Leland #1 is a very important sculpture in the City’s public art collection. The 20 ft high steel and porcelain enamel sculpture has brought distinction to our environment while surviving 35 years of buffeting from weather and graffiti. But now it is in serious need of structural stabilization and resurfacing which will cost an estimated $57,500.
A $20,000 grant from the NEA to the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) was a start but it required matching funds. To date the RACC has raised $39,500 but needs another $18,000 and is appealing to businesses and individuals. If you can help, please contact Matt Chase at RACC (503-823-5891).
The restoration is expected to begin this summer with Artist Lee Kelley collaborating with Conservator Marie Laibinis-Craft to complete the work in 3 to 4 weeks.

Welcome to Spring Bicycling Season
Submitted by chasland on Fri, 05/28/2010 - 09:48.
Good weather is here at last. All residents with bicycles in racks or bike room: make sure your bikes are ready for the road: tires inflated, permits visible, bike clean and ready to go.
APCA policy, adopted June, 2002, stipulates that assigned rack spaces are reserved for residents who use their bicycles. It further requires derelict bikes to be ticketed, then repaired or removed.
No longer using a stored bicycle? Others are on the waiting list for limited storage space. Consider donating your unused wheels to the Community Cycling Center. They will refurbish your bike or use it for parts to donate to programs for low-income youth and adults.
The Cycling Center needs about 2,500 bikes per year. Bring the bicycle to the Bike Shop, 1700 NE Alberta. A $5 or more donation is suggested to cover the costs of refurbishing.
