Meet the 3 Doctors Dowdy! Shirley (Ed’s sister-in-law) is a mathematician
People come to Portland for many reasons, one being to live in the city and enjoy all that is offered. Ed and Nancy came from Port Orford, where they retired 15 years ago to an ocean-view, 7 acres they are building into a special Asian-themed garden. They served as negotiators on the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in the late 1980s and early 90s, where they met. Ed’s back-ground is in Nuclear Engineering, Physics and Math; Nancy started in Electrical Engineering, then on to Nuclear Physics. At the Univ. of Chicago she served as Asst. VP for Research and later received a fellowship with the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. Ed retired from the Los Alamos National Lab. His PhD is from Texas A&M, her’s from Univ. Illinois-Urbana/ Champaign. After START, they resided and worked in DC. They married on Feb. 29, 1992, and thus had only their 4th Anniversary in 2008. Between them, they have 9 children and 18 grandchildren, ages 3 to 24.
Alan Hoffer: Teacher For All Ages
Submitted by chasland on Fri, 07/09/2010 - 09:41.A busy person, retired for only 10 years, Alan Hoffer is the newest member of the APCA Board of Directors. Laid low by a rupture to an Achilles tendon shortly after moving to Lincoln Tower a little over a year ago, his pace was slowed but not his perspectives and activities. A warm smile, a person who teaches by his manner, a thinker and a “doer,” Alan was a high school teacher and then a university mathematics professor who shares with us his desire for opportunities to learn and contribute. Starting to run marathons at 50 might not be for the faint of heart, but Alan started in Chicago, then Hawaii, and at 72 finished his last marathon in Portland.

Our Grant neighbors, Dwight & Carol, have, in two years, made their place at AP as half of the Tower Talk team: Carol as managing editor and reporter, Dwight as the computer formatter. Carol also was co-coordinator of the wonderful winter party in December. These are the kind of active residents and good new friends we can use here!
Both Dwight and Carol turned 80 in 2007. They first met in junior high school in Oakland, CA, but their first date was as seniors, going to the San Francisco Opera by bus and standing to hear “Carmen” with Risë Stevens. A really classy date!
